Invitation
Finding Light in the Midst of Madness
I mentioned last time that I have memorized two poems in my life, I am not counting The Canterbury Tales from my junior year of high school. Besides Emily Dickinson’s words on Hope via a Bird, Shel Silverstein’s Invitation gives me so much joy it is the second poem I have committed to memory.
I will recite it here:
If you are a dreamer, come in
If you are a dreamer, a wisher, a liar,
A hope-er, a pray-er, a magic bean buyer...
If you’re a pretender, come sit by the fire
For we have some flax-golden tales to spin.
Come in!
Come in!
His beautiful invitation encourages us to keep dreaming, to share our stories and to believe in magic. When we dream, listen to others’ tales, we co-create healing. We grow from our struggles and are reminded that we are not alone. We sprinkle star-dust.
When it gets tough, please heed the poet’s words and buy a bean and plant it. Water it. Watch it grow, then share the harvest with a pal. Life is worth living deeply, not to be ignored, hoarded or taken for granted.
When was the last time you sat by the fire?
Life is an invitation itself, to be held, examined, played with and cherished. Let’s smell it, eat it up, and dive into it.
Meet me by the fire, let’s swap stories as we listen to one another and create a bit of magic. Afterward we can wade in the river.
